Tea should be drunk without sugar, it is known and I will never stop repeating it: sweetening Tea alters its taste and aroma. Some people, however, especially if it is Tea with a strong flavor, just can’t help but add a little sweetness to their cup.
There are many ways to do this (sugar, honey, artificial sweetener), and among them is the use of Muscovadosugar syrup, which, however, is not always easy to find.
What if, however, I told you that you could create it at home in under 3 minutes and with just 2 ingredients?
Let’s first look at what Muscovado sugar is
It is an unrefined cane sugar with a dark color and somewhat moist texture (in fact, if you touch it, it feels like wet sand).
It has a stronger flavor and aroma than white sugar, very reminiscent of caramel and, albeit less strongly, of licorice. It is often used in the preparation of cookies and cakes as it makes such preparations softer and tastier.
By now, it is easy to find it in the supermarket, but if not, you can obtain it by adding molasses to granulated sugar, in a ratio of 10 to 1: adding to 200 g of sugar 20 g of molasses and stirring well with a fork or a whisk, you will obtain 220 g of brown sugar (not to be confused with classic brown sugar), which will be in every way (taste and texture included) similar to Muscovado.
What is Muscovado sugar syrup?
It is none other than a variation of simple syrup. Equal proportions of water and sugar are used to make it. It has a deep sweetness and a flavor that is similar to caramel that you don’t typically find in other syrups or sweeteners.
The consistency of this simple recipe is perfect for adding the sweetness you desire to your Tea without upsetting the taste too much. The majority of black teas, roasted oolong teas, matcha, hojicha, and genmaicha green tea are good pairings for it. It is simpler to incorporate into cold drinks than sugar alone because it is a liquid sweetener and does not settle to the bottom because it has already been dissolved. However, it can also be added to hot beverages.
More liquid or thicker?
Syrup can be made in a more liquid or thicker form, depending on what we need to use it for.
Perfect for blending into tea, coffee, cocktails, and other beverages has a more liquid consistency.
A thicker consistency is more suitable for pancakes, French toast, crepes, etc.
This recipe yields a syrup with a more liquid consistency, but if you prefer thicker syrup, simply cook it for a little longer.
Moscovado sugar syrup
With these doses you will get about 350 ml of syrup
Ingredients
- 1 cup Water
- 1 cup Muscovado sugar
Preparation
Place the water and sugar in a small saucepan. Heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved completely (about 2-3 minutes). There is no need to boil it because boiling it would make it thicker than is necessary for beverages.
If you notice a few pieces of sugar settling to the bottom of the saucepan, try breaking them up to melt them faster.
Once completely dissolved, remove from the heat and let it cool. It will thicken slightly when it has cooled.
In a bottle or jar that is sealed, pour the syrup. Keep in the fridge for up to one month. Use one teaspoon per cup to sweeten tea, lattes, cocktails, and other beverages.
Of course, you can modify the dosage to suit your preferences.
