Hojicha Iced Milk Recipe

Hojicha latte is an excellent tea drink for breakfast or at other times of the day. A good alternative to the more famous and scenic matcha latte for those who crave something different or are sensitive to theine, such as children.

The main ingredient is Japanese hojicha green tea powder, with a roasted, intense flavor reminiscent of hazelnuts and barley coffee. Add milk to this and there you have the recipe. Very easy, quick and highly satisfying! Hojicha powder is one of the trends of the moment, cornflakes, chocolates and other products with this tea are being sold in Japan. In the US it is not yet well known but I am sure it will be very successful. The flavor is closer to our tastes and the very low level of theine makes it really suitable for all drinkers, young and old.

Some time ago I shared with you my recipe with hot milk. Today I offer you something more suitable for summer and warm weather: hojicha cold milk, a cool, thirst-quenching and satisfying drink. Discover my recommendations.

Hojicha iced milk: summer recipe

(for 1 tumbler-type glass)

  • 2 teaspoons of hojicha tea powder
  • 150 ml milk (vegetable/goat/cow)
  • ice cubes

Making hojicha iced milk is really easy and only needs a few tools. Are you ready for the fun?

You can use a shaker, a small steel bottle or, why not, a blender. First pour in the brownish-colored hojicha powder. Then the ice cubes and, finally, the milk. Close with the cap and shake or blend well so that the tea powder dissolves completely. Be careful not to ruin your blender’s blades with ice. Rather add them later, directly into the glass.

Now all you have to do is serve your cold hojicha latte in a glass. Easy, right? Baristas listening, please don’t underestimate this both hot and cold drink that can be a viable alternative for those who, for so many reasons, cannot drink coffee and don’t like barley coffee (often proposed too watered down)!

Sugar? In my opinion in hojicha cold milk is not necessary and no sweetener will fit. Compared to a barley coffee, the drink is naturally sweeter, with notes reminiscent of cocoa, so adding sugar or honey risks making it overly sweet. Feel free to modify the recipe according to your taste. The world of tea is beautiful precisely because it is extremely versatile and can be easily adapted to anyone’s lifestyle and preferences

Where to find hojicha powder

In the last year, the powdered version of this Japanese tea is also becoming popular in the US. My guess is that you will be able to find it without any problems in your favourite tea store.
